Dogs and cats have some of the wittiest and sometimes funniest names, from clever wordplay to outright puns that showcase their owners’ creativity.

But this year, gone are the days when Max and Bella dominated the pet name charts. In 2024, pet owners have taken creativity to a whole new level, with names ranging from classic charmers to pop culture-inspired gems.

According to Rover, the pet-sitting site that analyzed millions of names from its users, this year’s top names reveal plenty about current trends – and a good dose of humor.

For male dogs, Charlie retains the crown for the second consecutive year, while Luna shines as the favorite for female dogs and cats alike.

Among male cats, Milo continues to lead, making it clear that simple, endearing names are still in vogue.

However, not all favorites from 2023 held their ground. Stella, once a top contender for dogs and cats, has taken a backseat. It’s been replaced by Coco in the canine rankings and Daisy in the feline world, signaling a shift toward names that evoke sweetness and charm.

Rover’s analysis didn’t stop at the familiar. Emerging trends hint at a wave of futuristic inspiration. Names like Gurney, Atreides and Chani, derived from the sci-fi epic Dune, are gaining traction. These nods to the novel-turned-movie show how popular culture continues to influence even the most unlikely areas of life – our pets’ identities.

Beyond the data, one thing is clear: pet owners aren’t afraid to think outside the box. From witty wordplay to pop culture homages, every name tells a story.
