Previously known by her professional name, Charice Pempengco, which is also his real name, Zyrus became a singing sensation both locally and internationally after trying his luck in several talent shows, and TV appearances. He then caught the attention of many big names in the music and entertainment industry in Hollywood, among them Ellen DeGeneres, Celine Dion, Oprah Winfrey, and David Foster, who later became his manager.
In 2010, the diminutive singer then transitioned to acting and television, joining the cast of the musical-comedy-drama TV series as Sunshine Corazon.
Zyrus came out as lesbian in 2013 and eventually went public as a transgender man four years later.
